SOM and BDP take over Foster’s New Covent Garden

SOM and BDP have been appointed to work on the Foster + Partners-masterplanned redevelopment of New Covent Garden Market in Nine Elms, London

The AJ100 practices are working for St Modwen and Vinci on the £2 billion project close to Kieran Timberlake’s new US Embassy.

The developers signed a contract with the Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA) earlier this year to take the project forward.

Working for CGMA, Foster + Partners and Neil Tomlinson Associates submitted outline plans for the 23 hectare scheme last year and won planning permission last summer.

The project is planned to include 2,800 new homes, 10,700m² of commercial space and a 51,000m² wholesale fruit and vegetable market.

BDP is designing the market buildings and SOM is working on a residential-led development on the site of the flower market.

Grant Brooker, senior partner at Foster and Partners said: ‘It is very positive news that the project has reached this stage.’
