Shortlist named in Wyre waterfront contest

Teams including Softroom, Liverpool’s Studio Three Architects and Ian McChesney have been named on a five-strong shortlist in the Wyre Way ‘Sea Change’ competition

The bids were selected from 53 entries in the CABE-backed contest to transform the seafront and create a new coastal trail between Cleveleys and Fleetwood, Lancashire.

The five shortlisted teams are: Sweden’s White with Berlin-based artist Jeppe Hein; BCA Landscape with up-and-coming Liverpool practice Studio Three Architects; Levitate Architecture with art consultants Grit and Pearl; Ian McChesney Architects with Untitled Practice and Peter Kirby; and LDA with Softroom Architecture.

Garry Payne, director of planning and regeneration for Wyre Borough Council, said: ‘These are people who can put their name to stunning projects known the world over, which means we can look forward to something very special for Cleveleys and Fleetwood.

‘A scheme like this would normally attract 30 or so expressions of interest, which could be quickly whittled down to the more feasible options. Not only has this expectation almost doubled, the quality has been so high that drawing up a shortlist proved a real challenge.’

‘It has underlined the council’s confidence that a cultural trail will add an extra dimension to Wyre’s waterfront and kick start the redevelopment of the Marine Hall and Gardens.’

A winner will be chosen after a final interview on 28 April 2010.

The successful team will be expected to start in May with construction due to start in the autumn.
