SHH polishes off revamp of London Zoo café

Hammersmith-based SHH has completed the £4.6 million transformation of London Zoo’s main restaurant.

The practice has enlarged the footprint of the now renamed Terrace Restaurant by almost 1,000m² allowing the number of covers to increase from 240 to 700. The scheme included the demolition of a 50-year-old extension to the original 1920s building.

The project includes a new tiered extension to the front of the old block - a 6m-high, double-height space - with new stairs leading up to an expanded mezzanine level.

SHH has also built a small extension to the rear of the Regent’s Park building for food storage space.

The architect’s view - SHH associate director and project leader Brendan Heath

‘The existing restaurant was updated in order to meet the growing needs of the zoo visitors. As visitor demands increased at the London attraction, the restaurant became in need of increased food storage space, modernised equipment and to work as a venue space for special events at the zoo, all the while incorporating the architectural quality of the original John James Joass building.

‘Above all, catering offers in the attractions marketplace had moved on and the zoo needed both to catch up and to get ahead of the competition, by creating a highly-functional, but also high impact space, which would add real quality to the visitor experience and be able to cope with the huge volume of people coming through the zoo - up to 10,000 per day.’
