Sheppard Robson completes stem-cell centre

Sheppard Robson has unwrapped this stem-cell research centre for the University of Edinburgh

The £35 million Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine is the first large-scale, purpose-built facility of its kind in the UK and will develop new treatments for human diseases affecting the nervous system, liver and other organs.

The 8,700m² building’s cantilevered structure is clad in clear and opaque curtain walling and features vertical aluminium fins to minimise solar gain.

Write-up spaces and offices sit around the perimeter of the centre, with concentric rings of primary and secondary laboratories and smaller specialised rooms moving towards the centre of the building.

The centre’s sustainable features include ground source heat pumps, rainwater harvesting, photovoltaics and chilled beams.
