ShedKM submits plans for £100m Brighton scheme

Shedkm has submitted plans to transform the municipal market on Brighton’s Circus Street into a £100 million mixed-use scheme including 142 homes and 4,200m2of offices and shops

Backed by developer the Cathedral Group, the project includes ‘two landmark public buildings’: a new home for South East Dance; and a library and teaching building for the University of Brighton.

Richard Upton, chief executive of Cathedral Group, said: ‘Our vision is to create a productive quarter of Brighton, economically and creatively, right on the site of the old fruit and vegetable market; a friendlier, greener neighbourhood where anything from seed swapping to roof top urban farming and orchard picking sits alongside art, culture, modern living and hi-tech start-up business.’

Brighton & Hove City Council is to begin statutory consultation on the planning application shortly, with the plans set to go to planning committee early next year.

If approved construction is due to start next summer (2014).

Liverpool and London-based shedkm beat AHMM, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, John McAslan and Make to land the job in November last year.
