Scramble on for new World Heritage Sites

Nearly 40 historic environments are pitching for UNESCO World Heritage Site status

The seaside resort of Blackpool, the rust-coloured Forth Bridge and even Jodrell Bank Observatory are among contenders wanting to get on the ‘tentative’ list for UNESCO’s recognition.

The UK is already home to 28 World Heritage Sites, including: Kew Gardens, the Tower of London, Stonehenge, Saltaire and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

One of the coalition-government’s first moves was to open the door to others however, including a possible rival to the Great Wall of China, Brunel’s entire Great Western Railway.

Heritage experts will now judge each entry, aiming to reveal in 2011 the UK’s new official ‘tentative’ list.

Architecture minister John Penrose said:  ‘What all 38 sites have in common is a wow factor and a cultural resonance that makes them real contenders to sit alongside The Pyramids and Red Square in this most distinguished of gatherings.’
