Ryder Architecture has completed this 7,300m² university centre for the Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education
The ‘monolithic’ £10 million, five-storey block is being billed as the ‘flagship building’ for the Institute’s Nuns Corner campus.
The archtiect’s view
The design is a white reflective, monolithic block with deeply grooved and brightly coloured window reveals. The white ceramic granite cladding of the building’s facade reflects the colours and shapes of the adjacent mature trees and plants. The internal accommodation and primary circulation wrap around a grand five-storey central atrium space, covered by a curved 580m² ETFE roof light. Accommodation comprises general teaching space, students’ union bar, vocational kitchen and servery, a library, media and radio production suites and open IT spaces.
The complex structural, mechanical and electrical services of the building have been carefully coordinated with the architectural design through the use of BIM.
