Ryder reveals Byker housing revamp

Ryder Architecture is preparing to submit for initial plans for a £2 million revamp of Ralph Erskine’s Grade II*-listed Byker housing estate in Newcastle

The Your Homes Newcastle project will upgrade a 17-unit building cluster which has been derelict for ten years.

Colin Haylock, urban design director at Ryder, said: ‘There are two really big wins. One, rescuing the building and two, taking away the [negative] impact it has on the housing around it.’

Haylock worked for Newcastle City Council on the original south Byker masterplan.
