Royal Academy of Music extension, London by John McAslan + Partners

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS + PROJECT DATA] John McAslan + Partners has completed this £1.4 million extension and renovation scheme for the Royal Academy of Music (RAM)

Dubbed the Void, the new bronze-clad building sits in a former light well – surrounded by listed buildings – at the academy’s Marylebone Road home in London.

According to the RAM, the scheme has created a ‘new general music practice room and opera practise room’ meaning students no longer have to practise in corridors and toilets.

A spokesman added: ‘The design connects the new building with an existing building, but is potentially extendable, or removable [and] responds very sensitively to planning issues associated with the listed buildings in the Conservation Area around it.’

Listed buildings next to or near the Void Building include the Grade II-listed Royal Academy of Music, the Grade 1 1-5 York Gate, the Grade II 42-48 York Terrace East, including the Jack Lyons Theatre.
