Rogers to make South American debut with Venezuelan bus terminal

Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) has revealed plans for a new bus terminal and masterplan in Caracas, Venezuela

The La Rinconada scheme, Rogers’ first project in South America, is 8.5km south-west of the capital.

The proposal creates a new metropolitan park to ‘protect the hillsides from further construction’ and outlines an area for a new campus and sport complex, as well as extending existing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes.

RSHP was originally approached by the mayor of Caracas, Jorge Rodriguez, to design a new bus station to replace an existing facility in La Bandera.

However, as work progressed the practice realised that a ‘strategy was required to give order to a wide range of initiatives for an area which, to date, remains a largely undeveloped green space’.

Simon Smithson, lead partner at RSHP said: ‘The mayor and his team have already done much to restore existing parks, squares and streets so that once again they are vibrant public spaces. We hope our new park and the transport interchange will contribute to the ongoing regeneration of this incredible city.’
