Rogers to make Shanghai debut with high-rise housing
Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) has been appointed to design a huge housing scheme on a 40,000m² site in Changfeng, west of Shanghai city centre
Backed by the UOL Group, the 430-home development features a series of tower built around low-rise townhouse blocks sat ‘amid lush landscaped gardens’.
The design will create a network of spaces that connect the site with neighbouring streets and the surrounding green areas and will also provide leisure facilities, a kindergarten and a 8,000m² retail complex.
Richard Rogers, chairman of RSHP, said: ‘Changfeng [will be] our first built project in Shanghai and will be one of the key residential developments in China. It offers high-rise apartments arranged around a central green space within which low-rise ‘town house’ blocks are located within landscaped gardens - an innovative concept for the China luxury housing market.
‘Our project will maximise views for residents and create opportunities for those living in the development to meet and interact. We are also delighted working with UOL, a company with an exceptional track record of delivering high quality residential projects in Southeast Asia, on such a unique offering for the China market.’
The client’s view
A spokesman said: Richard Rogers was a direct appointment by UOL Group. Internally through various in-depth exercises, we considered a few other big international names. But in the end, we were impressed by Rogers’ company philosophy, past projects and refined architectural craftsmanship.
