Roger Stephenson submits plans for Manchester hotel tower

Plans have emerged for a new 20-storey, 258-bedroom Yotel hotel close to Manchester’s Piccadilly station designed by Roger Stephenson’s new practice

The 8,067m² scheme at 12-16 Piccadilly is backed by YO! Sushi founder Simon Woodroffe and is being billed as ‘Yotel’s first brand standard UK hote’.l

Drawn up by Stephenson:ISA Studio, which Stephenson formed with the support of Ian Simpson Architects earlier this year, the scheme features 14m² rooms with motorised beds which convert into a sofa for ‘daytime use’.

The project includes the conversion of the grade II-listed Union Bank with the new-build element built from ‘load bearing pre-cast concrete elements which are stitched together to form a rigid ‘honeycomb’ structure’.

Backed by Russells Construction and Property Alliance Group, the plans are expected to go before committee before the end of the year. Subject to approval, work is expected to start on site in early 2014.

The scheme is among a number of new hotels emerging in a cluster close to Piccadilly station. In the last few weeks construction has begun on Hodder + Partners’ nearby 330-room Motel One development.
