RMJM designs model city in Pakistan

Top 20 AJ100-practice RMJM has unveiled its masterplan for a model city project 50 km from Karachi in Pakistan

Working in partnership with Doxiadis and Osmani Associates, RMJM has drawn up plans for DHA City on a 4,700 ha rural site.

The masterplan includes 50,000 residential and commercial plots, healthcare and higher education institutes, theme parks, a convention centre, sports facilities, retail, restaurants and community facilities.

A car-free area will ‘define the city’s pedestrian heart’ with tree-lined paths, courtyards, water features and piazzas.

Sustainable design principles have been used across the city and prominent natural features will be preserved.

Construction is due to begin in 2012 and take part in stages with full completion in 2030.

RMJM associate Ziyad Mahmoud said: ‘We have developed a masterplan that adopts and implements the planning principles behind the Ekistics theory.

‘This promotes the concept of mixed-use residential sectors by creating multiple centres within them spreading facilities such as commerce, amenities and parks throughout these areas.’
