Rio 2016 stadium wins for 3DReid and AndArchitects

3DReid and emerging practice AndArchitects have been appointed to design stadiums for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

3DReid will act as design advisor for locally-based BLAC Architects on the Velodrome.

The scheme has already been developed up to the RIBA stage C as part of the Aecom-designed masterplan for the upcoming summer games.

A 3DReid spokesperson said: ‘It’s great to be involved in Rio 2016. It’s good for UK architects that the games organisers are being very open and drawing on expertise gained during the London Olympics.’

The appointment follows 3DReid’s completion of the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

South London-based AndArchitects will meanwhile work alongside Rio-based Lopes, Santos & Ferreira Gomes on the handball arena.

AndArchitects managing director Manuel Nogueira said: ‘We are delighted to be working in Brazil for Rio 2016 Games. We hope to use the expertise gained working on six temporary building projects for London 2012 to the team in Rio.’

The announcement coincided with a trade mission led by London Olympics chief Sebastian Coe to the major Brazilian city. Practices on the trip included Foster + Partners, Amanda Levete Architects, Avanti, Haworth Tompkins and emerging outfit de Matos Ryan.

Coe said: ‘[The London] games would not have been possible without the expertise of British business and it is great to hear that UK firms have won these prestigious projects.’

Trade and Investment Minister Stephen Green said: ‘There are still many opportunities out there for UK companies to win business for Rio, new tenders are opening up all the time. UKTI in London and Rio stand ready to facilitate this and help more UK firms win business for the next Games.’

UKTI estimates that the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and Rio Olympics two years later will create more than 12,000 infrastructure projects.
