Château du Domaine Royal in Randan, France

The Regional Council of Auvergne is seeking services for the securing, upgrading and water protection for the ruins of the Château du Domaine Royal in Randan, France.

The project is to be undertaken in 2 phases. The first stage will halt the degradation of the building fabric and preserve the walls of the façade, chimneys and decorative elements. The second phase will focus on the stability of the interior and access.

The Chateau dates from the 13th century. It was acquired in 1821 by Princess Adélaïde d’Orléans, sister of King Louis-Philippe. The Chateau and its gardens were restored and expanded under the direction of neo-Classical architect Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine (1762-1853). Fontaine was one of the creators of the so-called ‘style Empire’.

In 1925 during a party given by the widow of Ferdinand, the last Duke de Montpensier who had died under mysterious circumstances at the age of 37, there was a serious fire at the (insured) Chateau.

The inheritance passed to the second and secret husband of his widow and thereafter the Chateau fell into disrepair, with the valuable and very English collections of the Orléans family being dispersed or lost.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on 1 September and the application language is French.
