RIBA president Angela Brady has raised serious concern over architecture students’ financial hardship as the institute invited entries to its 2012 Part II scholarship programme
Portland Place has pledged to give four students £2,500 each to support their studies but Brady warned the institute was ‘still not raising enough’ to meet students’ needs.
She said: ‘I’m delighted that the RIBA has been able to launch the 2012 Part 2 Scholarship in these tough and austere times for architects.
‘Despite having received one legacy bequest, raising much needed funds through the President’s Fundraising dinner, and offering other high profile and popular Scholarships with Aedas and Foster + Partners, the RIBA Education Fund is still not raising enough to meet the needs from the increasing number of Architecture students in financial hardship.
‘All of this comes at a time when we need to do more to open up the profession to a wider and more diverse talent pool from all backgrounds; this is where the RIBA Education Fund can really make huge changes to students’ lives.’
She added: ‘The RIBA is committed to helping as many students facing financial hardship as possible. In these tough economic times we urge our members and practices to consider the next generation and contribute towards the RIBA Education Fund.’
Previous RIBA Education Fund recipient Jo Ashbridge said: ‘Architecture has opened up the world to me. I am absolutely convinced that without financial support from the RIBA I could not have experienced or achieved so much.
‘I would urge donors and organisations who can afford it to support the RIBA funding schemes wholeheartedly to ensure that great visionaries do not slip through the net. Equally, for students who may be finding it difficult to financially support their studies I would advise them to investigate all opportunities offered by the RIBA. Investment in the next generation is investment in all our futures.’
In addition to the RIBA Education Fund, the following RIBA funding schemes are currently open to entries:
- RIBA Aedas Stephen Williams Scholarship
- RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship
- RIBA Walter Parker Bursary
- RIBA Part 2 Scholarship
