RIBA London chair Azar Djamali resigns

RIBA London chair Azar Djamali last night (29 April) resigned ahead of a vote of no confidence in her leadership

Her departure follows members’ calls for her resignation, which culminated in a vote of no confidence planned for a council meeting last night.

The AJ understands Djamali delivered a pre-prepared speech last night critical of RIBA London staff and members before announcing her resignation.

One attendee said: ‘The meeting had more attendees than any London Region meeting in history, giving the appearance of rubber-neckers at a car crash.’

RIBA members this week called on Ruth Reed, RIBA president to intervene in the process.

Reed confirmed Dolan Conway, chair of RIBA North East Region, would act as chair until an election at the region’s June annual general meeting.

She said: ‘I thank Azar Djamali for her contribution to the RIBA and look forward to her continuing active participation in RIBA London and National councils.’

Djamali declined to comment. She took the RIBA London chair in September.
