RIBA launches Hastings Pier competition

An open design competition has been launched for the redevelopment of Hastings Pier on the east Sussex coast

The pier opened in 1872 and was designed by Eugenius Birch, architect of Brighton’s now ruined West Pier.

Ongoing deterioration forced the tourist attraction’s closure in 2008, but the Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust (HPWRT) was established to spearhead its restoration. HPWRT appointed RIBA to manage the selection of a design team for the job.

The Trust needs an architect to develop the project’s funding and design strategy. Selection of a design team will be by competitive interview.

Designers with ‘exceptional design skills and experience in engaging the local community’ are sought. Experience of work in historical contexts is inessential.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 14 October.
