RIBA competition-winning Hong Kong shop installations revealed

The winning designs in a RIBA Hong Kong-backed contest for a series of shopping mall installations have been unveiled

Earlier this year RIBA’s Hong Kong chapter selected designs by three RIBA-registered, locally-based practices to be constructed inside the city’s prestigious Swire Pacific Place shopping mall.

Completed last week, the installations include ‘This is OUR Place’ by Howard Chung, Irene Cheng and Sabah Ashiq which features a dozen oversized musical horns hanging from an atrium ceiling.

Constructed from wicker and bronze, the horns feature 360° video displays, mirrors and interactive lighting.

Edmond Wong, Gary Law, Kylie Chan and Charis Mok have also created the ‘Hall of Fame’ installation inspired by ancient Chinese methods of recording text.

The steel-framed structure features suspended raw bamboo and fibreglass tubes which use back-lit perforation to display messages.

The final installation – ‘Now and Then’ by Slavomir Siska, Ruyin Liu and Tie Fan – comprises five sculptures arranged in a pentagon. Each structure contains two television screens positioned at different heights.

The three installations will remain on site until 10 June 2014.
