Birds Portchmouth Russum Architects has won the £10,000 architecture prize at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, sponsored by Lend Lease and supported by the AJ
The judges combined two submissions by the practice, one for a house in Wood Lane, north London, another for a scheme in Jersey, both of which, they said, ‘elegantly described the designs […] almost without words’. The jury included AJ editor Christine Murray; Paul Finch, chair of Design Council CABE; Daniel Labbad of Lend Lease and Piers Gough, RA who curated the show with Alan Stanton, RA.
The £5,000 award for Best First Time Exhibitor was won by Judy Liebert. The artist stitched drawings by her husband, architect Julian Marsh, of their new Nottingham house (AJ 10.03.11) onto a bedcover.
Labbad, chief executive officer of EMEA, Lend Lease, said: ‘Choosing the winner of this year’s Lend Lease/Architects’ Journal Awards for Architecture was not an easy task.
‘The submissions were diverse, impressive and a wonderful representation of both the talent and contribution made by the profession. In recognition of this, Lend Lease is honoured to sponsor these awards.’
The show runs from 7 June to 15 August.
