Revealed: winners in Cambridge housing contest

The AJ can reveal the victorious, prototype home proposals for a major new development in Cambridge backed by mammoth aerospace and defence company Marshall

Among the winners, who submitted various housing typologies for the site next to Marshall’s existing home at Cambridge airport, were Pollard Thomas Edward Architects (PTEa) Metro Studio UK, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects and Feilden & Mawson.

Other finalists in the open competition included Freeland Rees Roberts, Mole Architects, Haworth Tompkins and Haysom Ward Miller.

The company wants to build 1,300 homes, a primary school and nursery, open public space, a commercial hub and foodstore within a new high-density neighbourhood which will sit partly on brownfield land.

Marshall has said it wants to take a ‘paternalistic’ long-term view of the so-called Wing development and hopes to develop an exemplar ‘garden city-style’ community with 40 per cent affordable housing.

PTEa has already drawn up an outline masterplan for the plot which was developed through an Enquiry by Design process managed by the Prince’s Foundation, and which will be submitted for planning next month.

A spokesman for Marshall said: ‘If successful at outline planning stage, the next step will be the Design Code. To achieve the very best design, we will run a bi-ennial architectural ideas competition. This will ensure that we continue to challenge the look of the development, incorporate new ideas or trends and evolve as is the traditional nature of city or village development.’
