Revealed: Heatherwick Studio's redesigned Routemaster
The Mayor of London has unveiled designs for a new double-decker bus designed by Thomas Heatherwick
Based on the traditional Routemaster, the new bus features an open platform as well as three doors and two staircases. Five of the buses will be in service in time for the 2012 Olympic games.
Drawn up by Wrightbus together with Heatherwick Studio, which took on the job after Foster + Partners was dropped late last year despite jointly winning a design competition in 2008, the vehicle has a glass ‘swoop’ at the rear and will be powered using hybrid technology.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: ‘It will cut emissions, and give Londoners a bus they can be proud of, complete with cutting edge design, and the freedom of an open platform.
‘I expect to eventually have hundreds of these on London’s roads, and for cities around the globe to be beside themselves with envy for our stunning red emblem of 21st century London.’
Wrightbus engineers are working on a static mock up of the bus to be complete later this year with the first prototype to be delivered late next year.
