Revealed: Five firms vying for Liverpool's ‘Parc Guell’ project
The AJ can reveal the five designs in the contest to create a centrepiece ‘hub’ as part of plans to transform Liverpool’s ‘underused’ Everton Park into an international visitor destination.
Local practices Austin:Smith-Lord, Broadway Malyan, Studio Three, Cass Associates and Union North offshoot FVMA with shedkm were invited to vie for the £1.8 million project and presented their initial proposals to residents and stakeholders last week. The firms were asked to draw up proposals for ‘a meeting place and operational hub’ housing a café, information centre and gallery.
Richard Tracey from project backer Liverpool Vision said: ‘Everton Park is one of the city’s precious green lungs, but it has been underused in the past. This is all about to change. We are creating a vibrant and fun visitor destination – in the same way that Barcelona’s Parc Guell is.’
International artist Fritz Haeg and High Line mastermind James Corner have already released plans for a heritage trail and other landscape improvements to help knit the park into the city.
A winner is expected to be announced by the end of the month.
The chair of the community group Friends of Everton Park Paul Edwards said: ‘Everton’s local community are very excited about the prospect of the park taking another big step forward. We have been closely involved in the emergence of the Destination Hub and we would urge local people to add their voices to the views being gathered at the consultation event tonight.
‘The park needs these facilities if it is to realise the ambitions of the neighbourhood and become a must see place for all those visiting Liverpool.’
