RA Summer Exhibition winners announced

Steve Chilton of Marks Barfield Architects has won the £10,000 architecture prize at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, sponsored by Bovis Lend Lease and supported by the AJ

Though the judges were very impressed with the overall quality of this year’s exhibition they felt that Chilton’s winning entry, Hyper Tower, perfectly encapsulated the theme of this year’s exhibition: ‘raw’.

The jury included AJ editor Christine Murray; Paul Finch, chair of CABE; Nick Pollard of Bovis Lend Lease; director of the Architecture Foundation, Sarah Ichioka and David Chipperfield, who served on this year’s RA selection committee for architecture.

The £5,000 award for best first-time exhibitor was won by young London-based practice 6A architects, for a mock-up of its Mines Park Model, A New English Country House.  The judges were struck by the intricate beauty of the model, which Chipperfield called ‘seductive’.

High commendations for best first-time exhibitors went to Thomas Hillier’s The Migration of Mel and Judith as well as to A Box of Ideas, Hadspen Gardener’s House Competition by Florian Beigel and Philip Christou.

The exhibition runs from 14 June to 22 August.
