PRP wins planning to revamp Balfron Tower block

PRP Architects has won planning permission for a project to revamp Carradale House, part of the Ernö Goldfinger-designed Brownfield housing estate in east London

Preserving the Grade II-listed building’s 1960s façade, the project for estate owner Poplar HARCA will deliver a full overhaul of the building, bringing it up to modern standards.

Containing 88 apartments, the 11-storey block was appointed Grade II-listed status in 2000 and sits within the Balfron Tower Conservation Area.

The practice plans to restore the ‘brutalist authenticity’ of the building by removing surface-mounted cabling and aerials and by cleaning and restoring the structure’s concrete and mosaics.

Double glazed windows and internal insulation will help to reduce Carradale House’s energy consumption.

Communal areas will be restored to their ‘original palette of materials and colours’ while kitchens will be replaced in ‘the spirit of the original layout’ and bathrooms will be enlarged to include W.C.s.

Carradale House was the second phase of Ernö Goldfinger’s Brownfield Estate development which preceded the iconic Trellick Tower in west London. Goldfinger briefly lived in the estate’s 27-storey Balfron Tower building in 1965.
