Price of Wallinger’s white horse soars to £12 million
The construction cost for artist Mark Wallinger’s project to build a 50-metre high equestrian statue in Ebbsfleet, Kent has spiralled from £2 to £12 million
Detailed design work which followed planning permission approval in April last year has led to a revised price tag for the scheme, which aims to create landmark structure next to Ebbsfleet international train station.
A spokesperson for the project explained early estimates were challenging because there were no precedents other than Anthony Gormley’s £1 million Angel of the North from which to make accurate price comparisons but said the horse had to be designed to survive for 80 years without cost to local rate payers.
According to the spokesperson the £2 million funding pot was simply intended to ‘get the project going’ while fundraising was about to commence to find the rest of the money needed.
Funding for the statue is being sought outside of the public sector, they claimed.
