Practice Architecture completes South Kilburn Studios

[First look] Practice Architecture has completed this transformation of a disused temporary building on a council estate in South Kilburn into studios

Backed by the Architecture Foundation, Brent Council and South Kilburn Neighbourhood Trust, the scheme provides free studios for 13 tenants which will mentor local people in their trades.

Practice Architecture, whose projects include the Franks Café rooftop bar in Peckham, beat Aberrant Architecture, We Made That, and Erect Architecture to win the brief in Feburary.

The outfit created a 24 metre long light-box extension to ‘signpost’ the centre while reconfiguring the building’s internal layout and replacing carpets with ply floors.

As many as 70 volunteers helped to deliver the scheme over the course of six weeks.

South Kilburn Studios residents include composer Benjamin Stefanski, film maker Jonathan Nyati, milliner Victoria Grant and Tatiana von Preussen, Catherine Pease and Jessica Reynolds of vPPR Architects. The thirteen tenants, chosen through a ‘competitive open call process’, will remain at the building until September.

Lettice Drake and Paloma Gormley, Practice Architecture directors explained: ‘We were asked by the Architecture Foundation to create a space that addressed the issues of unemployment in the local area.

‘The decision to convert the building into studio spaces seemed very natural given its existing layout and we were excited about integrating traineeships into the traditional studio structure. We hope that this project will become a strong case study to inspire future initiatives based on this model.’

Alex Hearn, regeneration officer for major projects at Brent Council, added: ‘We believe that South Kilburn Studios will ignite interest in South Kilburn and deliver new types of services to the local community. We see creative meanwhile projects such as South Kilburn Studios as a fundamental part of our regeneration strategy for the borough.’

South Kilburn Studios is now on the hunt for 13 Brent residents aged between 18 and 25 to take part in the traineeships.
