Populous’s £60m Leeds Arena completes

Populous’ Leeds Arena is gearing up to open its doors after construction work completed on the £60million music venue

Leeds Council has now handed Leeds Arena over to operators SMG which will manage the interior fit-out process before it opens to the public in July 2013.

The much-anticipated Leeds Arena has a capacity of 13,500 people and has a fan-shaped interior designed to optimise views of the stage for all spectators.

The structure’s exterior comprises a honeycomb design, based on a Voronoi diagram, with a lighting system than changes colour and design at night.

John Rhodes, project architect and principal at Populous, said that his practice had designed a ‘supertheatre’ for the city which ‘will be one of the most sustainable multi-event venues in the UK.’

Bruce Springsteen has been confirmed as the first act planned for the venue on 24 July 2013.
