Populous completes Brazil 2014 World Cup stadium

The Populous-designed Arena das Dunas, in Natal, has been officially opened by Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff

Inspired by the coastal city’s ‘sand dune landscape’ the roof of 42,000 seater venue in northern Brasil consists of 20 ‘petal-shaped modules’.

The stadium will host four group stage matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.

Following the tournament 10,600 seats will be removed from the stadium.

Last year two people died when a crane collapsed at Sao Paulo World Cup stadium site and Brazil has admitted that it is struggling to meet construction deadlines for the 2014 World Cup stadiums.

Architect’s view

Christopher Lee, senior principal, Populous

‘Brazilians are passionate about their football and are rightly proud of their country’s unparalleled record in the World Cup.

‘We have designed a stadium and a masterplan that showcases the aesthetics of the beautiful surrounding area of das Dunas and will create a great atmosphere for the World Cup 2014.’
