Populous bags Nanjing Youth Olympics masterplanning role

[First look] Populous has been appointed to masterplan the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China

The 189 hectare site will host 400,000m² worth of floor space when it opens for the games in 2014. In ‘legacy’ mode the development is expected to expand in size to 3,000,000m².

During the games a number of the buildings – including venues and athletes accommodation – will be lit ‘like lanterns’ according to the studio.

Ashley Munday, principal of Populous’ masterplanning team said: ‘Our primary brief was to create a lasting legacy for the city of Nanjing following the Youth Olympics in 2014.

‘The Masterplan was designed with the long term development of the city in mind and the Olympic Games have been carefully positioned to inhabit the new city rather than retrofit a legacy.  Nanjing will literally light up for the Games, highlighting the city as the host of the Games.’

Some sporting events will be held in the Nanjing Sports Centre which was designed by populous and opened in 2005 for the 10th National Games of China.
