Plea to raise cash for Eileen Gray villa restoration fails

A filmaker’s attempt to raise £160,000 to renovate the iconic E1027 villa in southern France has failed

EG Film Productions launched a video appeal for the money necessary to restore the Modernist house designed by Irish architect Eileen Gray.

The production company said its appeal aimed ‘to make a substantial contribution to the restoration of this architectural triumph’.

But just £27,000 was donated before the appeal closed in early May, raising the prospect that the film will have to rely on temporary decoration for shoots at E1027.

A second appeal has now been launched with a much less ambitious target of $40,000 and a new cut off date of 9 June. So far only $6,315 has been pledged.

The film, The Price Of Desire, focuses on the life and works of Gray.

The villa is currently undergoing restoration work under the supervision of the French cultural authorities.
