Plasma Studio completes Xi'an Expo centre

London-based Plasma Studio has taken the wraps of its ‘Flowing Gardens’ building at the Xi’an International Horticultural Expo in China

Won in 2009 as part of an international competition, the building is the main venue for the ecology event which is expected to receive 12 million visitors over the coming six months. The Expo opened last Thursday (28 April) on a 37 hectare former sandpit in the city’s Chan-ba ecological district.

Designed with Beijing-based landscape designers GroundLab and LAUR Studio, the project aims to create a synergy between built and natural forms.

The three-building scheme is divided into four areas:

  • The Guangyun Entrance, a land bridge with a ‘tensegrity trellice’ structure that will gradually become overgrown by greenery
  • The Chang-Ba Flower Valley, inspired by a river delta and featuring a network for the ‘intermingling circulation’ of landscape and water
  • The Creativity Pavilion, three cantilevered structures above a lake with landscape running in between which carries visitors towards the shore
  • The Greenhouse, submerged into the hillside

A statement from Plasma Studio explained: ‘Flowing Gardens explores a new [synergetic] balance between urbanism and landscape with universal relevance.

‘The traditional subordination of ground and landscape by buildings has been reversed to offer a unique symbiotic experience.’
