Penrose lists Leeds brutalist campus

Architecture minister John Penrose has awarded Grade II-listed status to Chamberlin, Powell and Bon’s buildings at the University of Leeds

Previous minister Margaret Hodge thrice refused to list brutalist buildings, including John Madin’s Birmingham Central Library and Alison and Peter Smithson’s Poplar Robin Hood Gardens.

A spokesperson for the Twentieth Century Society said the campaign group was ‘hopeful the post-war in-tray is going to start moving.’

The Roger Stevens lecture hall (pictured) recieved grade II* listing.
