Patel Taylor wins planning for Fortress Wapping overhaul

Patel Taylor has won planning for a 1,800 home, residential-led redevelopment of ‘Fortress Wapping’ – Rupert Murdoch’s former News International headquarters in east London

The high-profile St George-backed project for the disused office and print works also features 20,000m² of commercial space, a 375 metre-long promenade and a secondary school.

A proposed 33-storey apartment tower was reduced in height by eight storeys as the scheme progressed through planning and consultation.

According to the practice, the approved masterplan ‘breaks up the barriers posed by the former Fortress Wapping opening it up as a permeable site for the public with a series of landscaped gardens inspired by the heritage of the historic London Dock in Wapping.’

Richard Griffiths Architects is also working on plans to convert the Grade II-listed Pennington Street Warehouse into cafés, restaurants and small offices

St George, part of the Berkeley Group, bought the land from News International in May 2013, spelling the end for Amanda Levete’s previously consented plans to remodel the main building for the media giant (see AJ 11.11.2009)

The first phase of development will commence March this year, with the entire development expected to take up to 15 years.

Patel Taylor has submitted a hybrid application to redevelop ‘Fortress Wapping’ – Rupert Murdoch’s former News International headquarters in east London

The high-profile St George-backed project – featuring a landmark 33-storey residential tower – creates 1,800 new homes on the disused offices and print works.

The masterplan for the six hectare plot, part of the historic London Docks, also features 20,000m² of commercial space a 375 metre-long promenade and a secondary school.

Richard Griffiths Architects is also working on plans to convert the Grade II-listed Pennington Street Warehouse into cafés, restaurants and small offices.

The first phase includes the tower and a public plaza similar in size to King’s Cross’ Granary square.

St George managing director Nick Hutchings said: ‘We are grateful for the very constructive and positive input we have had from local people and I believe we have an exceptional proposal for London Dock. Our plans will provide high quality homes together with much needed jobs and land for a new secondary school.’

The first phase is expected to start in 2014 with the entire developed planned to take 15 years to complete.

The 1979 print works, designed by Wimpey with Grove Consultants, was constructed on the northern part of the infilled London Docks.
