Page/Park reveals plans for its largest ever scheme

Page\Park Architects has revealed images of its largest project to date: the new £60 million HQ for Scottish Power in St Vincent Street, Glasgow

The Glasgow-based practice has collaborated with Ortis Leon Architects from Madrid on the 20,400m2 office project, which is expected to start on site next year (2013).

Work on the 14-storey building, which is being backed by Helical Bar and Dawn Developments, is expected to complete in 2015.

The location of the new Scottish Power Headquarters Building is a prominent gateway site to the centre of the city. Three aspects have been important in our very early consideration of how the building should best respond to the site and these are manifest in the outline form which is emerging:

  • At the base, the creation of a two storey pedestrian arcade relating to the public activities of the lower floors creating a sheltered route into the city from the motorway bridge.
  • Occupying the mid zone, absolutely clear flexible floorplates serviced, supported and structured external to that floorplate on the east west axis with a consequential exploitation of the resultant deep profile on the elevations.
  • At the upper level stepping the building profile to fit with the disparate existing scales of the neighbourhood.

The metre deep vertical accentuation of the externally expressed structural and service elements has two roles,  seeking a balance of building mass and transparency and secondly mediating between the open aspect to the motorway with the intimacy of the adjacent city centre.
