Obituary: Gwen Cottrell (1952-2011)

RIBA East Midlands regional director Gwen Cottrell has died from leukaemia at the age of 59

Gwen Cottrell (pictured), RIBA regional director in the East Midlands, passed away on Thursday 20 October after being ill for some time with acute myeloid leukaemia.

During Cottrell’s 13 years working with the RIBA - first in Yorkshire and then in the East Midlands - she was valued for her ‘energy, warmth, commitment and professionalism’, according to an institute statement.

She established Kenya’s first hospice and created a ‘lasting legacy to her passion and professional skill’ through her projects such as ‘4 x 4’ talks in Yorkshire, the East Midlands’ Low Carbon Award and a ‘fifty/50’ exhibition.

Cottrell is survived by her husband Derek.

There will be a private committal ceremony on Wednesday 2 November followed by a celebration of her life at 2.15 pm at St John the Baptist Church, Ermine, Lincoln

Cottrell’s family have requested that no flowers are sent, but donations may be made to Hospice Care Kenya or the Nottinghamshire Leukaemia Appeal.
