Norman Foster reveals Manchester hospital plans
Foster + Partners has unveiled this image of its proposed new £70 million private hospital in Didsbury, Manchester
The project will be Foster + Partners’ second hospital for healthcare partnership Circle. The studio’s RIBA Award-winning Circle Bath Hospital scheme for the same client made this year’s ‘midlist’ for the Stirling Prize.
The design will feature ‘healing gardens’ and naturally-lit spaces aimed at boosting patient’s recovery.
Circle’s acquisitions advisor, Rory Coonan of Health Properties South Manchester said: ‘We chose Norman because we wanted someone who was a proven innovator and can bring that to hospitals – a building type in need of refreshing.
‘This will be a landmark building. It will bring to Manchester a beacon for 21st century healthcare, working in partnership with the other providers in the city’s growing world class health sector.’
The hospital will cater for private clients but could also receive NHS contracts. The scheme has been submitted for planning and the competed facility is expected to open in 2013.
