NORD completes first building for 2012 Olympic site

[FIRST LOOK] Glasgow-based NORD has created this black-brick sub-station for the 2012 Olympic Games site in East London

The sub-station houses three huge transformers for client, electricity supplier, EDF Energy.

The practice was actually appointed on the scheme by the Olympic Delivery Authority in 2007 and asked to ‘develop a strong contextual approach to a key utility building within the Olympic Park’.

According to the architects: ‘The building is not designed as an event in its own right but as part of a number of buildings that form the fabric of the Olympic site itself;  having permanency, weight and dignity.’

  • Britain's vision of the future.........somewhat grey & dismal......

    Unsuitable or offensive?

  • it does exactly what it says on the tin...

NORD are a good practice and i'm delighted that they got a piece of the Olympic pie...no matter how modest...It is certainly more inspiring than the nonsense being designed by Morrison and Allies and the other so called big names on the Olympic ticket...

  • A blank windowless box. Inspired by NORD's own office space, perhaps?

  • erm.. why would you need windows in a substation?

    Unsuitable or offensive?

  • Richly contextual and thoughtful response to a difficult brief. Countless big name swiss firms would be proud of this and we should be too. Britain of the future might be better off with a little less 'grey and dismal' cynisism and a little more of this kind of intelligent design. We could use more architects in this country who believe that understatement is a virtue.

  • What a great project... Will it be the first substation to ever get onto the Striling prize shortlist?!

  • I am very inspired indeed.
It is very "Nordic" and Uk architects should learn from such modest and refined approach to architecture.
But I bet Fretton will win!
