No 'call in' for 5 Plus-designed Chatham Waters development

The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government’s Eric Pickles has rubberstamped 5 Plus Architects’ £650 million mixed-use development at Chatham Docks

The proposed 176,500m² Chatham Waters scheme for Peel Land & Property won outline permission from Medway Council earlier this year (AJ 01.06.2012).

Pickles’ decision not to call in the plans for his own determination gives the go-ahead for the brownfield site’s development, which will incorporate offices, education facilities, a conference centre, a hotel, public areas, and apartments and houses.

It is hoped that the massive plans will create 3,500 jobs. Indigo Planning and Planit ie, Traffic Transport & Highway Consultancy are also advising on the scheme.

Peel Land & Property development director James Whittaker said: ‘We’re delighted the Secretary of State has approved outline plans for Chatham Waters.

‘Our proposals will regenerate and breathe new life into a significant area of the dockland and give the region a real economic boost. We have started to prepare detailed plans for the first phase and we hope to be start building on the site next year.’

Medway Council leader Rodney Chambers called the scheme ‘a major step forward’ for the regeneration of the area, and ‘a clear indication of how the area is growing and continuing to attract significant investment from developers and businesses’.

‘Not only will it create thousands of jobs for residents in the near future, but it will provide opportunities for future growth and unrivalled facilities for residents and visitors alike to enjoy and benefit from.’
