[FIRST LOOK + PLANS + DATA] Emerging practice NEX has designed the interior and furniture for an architectural bookshop within the Architectural Association’s Grade I-listed building in central London
As part of the AA’s on-going development programme the bookshop was relocated to provide extra shelf space within an ‘improved retail environment’ to attract more customers to the store.
Following a 3D laser survey of the room, the architect designed and manufactured a bespoke range of furniture ‘within a flat pack budget’.
Around 1,000 pieces of birch plywood were cut on a computer controlled router then waxed, flat-packed, and shipped to Bedford Square for assembly and fitting according to detailed schematic instructions.
Full fit-out and furnishings, preservation of sensitive listed features, including cornice work, dado rails, skirtings and internal plaster finishes were completed within a budget of £400/m².
