Newcastle University, King's Gate building by Bond Bryan

[FIRST LOOK + PROJECT DATA] Bond Bryan has completed this new £22 million gateway building for Newcastle University

The 8,000m² King’s Gate building in Barras Bridge - opposite St. Thomas’s Green - has been dubbed the new ‘front door’ to the University and houses staff offices, meeting rooms and social areas.

The Sheffield-based practice landed the contract to design the glass and sandstone building following a design competition in 2007, seeking off the likes of Terry Farrell and Partners, Faulkner Brown, Howarth Lichfield and the Howe Partnership.

Bond Bryan director Geoff Halliwell said: ‘This has been a very successful project from the start: on time, on budget, with an excellent construction team from BAM, and with a client thrilled to see its vision for an exciting public-facing building come to life with students and staff.

‘Internally the building has a very mixed use – from student support services to estates administration to management teams including the Vice Chancellor and Registrar – so the specification for five storeys of workspace had to be robust and elegant.

He added: ‘The office floors focus upon two atria - a four-storey volume to the Barras Bridge frontage and a five-storey volume to King’s Walk.  The four-storey atrium unites the interactive working environments and provides a sky-lit social place, maximising daylight and acting as a thermal and acoustic buffer between the offices and the busy Barras Bridge carriageway.’
