New Year, new contest: major Vauxhall competition on cards

The RIBA’s competitions office is to open a contest in the New Year to redesign an area in Vauxhall, central London

Business improvement district Vauxhall One is seeking designs to improve the public realm between the US Embassy Quarter and the South Bank.

The competition will open on 14 January 2013, with submissions for Stage 1 due by 12 March. These will be exhibited in April.

Vauxhall One public realm and development director Chris Law said: ‘Vauxhall is changing fast and the public realm is critical.

‘We want to create sustainable green links through the district and on to the river Thames.

‘We want to connect the New American Embassy to London’s South Bank with new green and cultural trails, which tell the story of the area’s rich and colourful past in the architectural and landscape language of the 21st Century. We’re looking for creative design innovation.’

The competition website will go live on 14 January.
