New practices: Studio KMA

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Where have you come from? Two Manchester City centre based commercial architectural practices. AEW Architects for the past five and a half years and Leach Rhodes Walker for 19 and a half years.

What work do you have and what kind of projects are you looking for?
A number of town centre regeneration projects – retail and residential led, a church hall and community sports facility, a large private house and two industrial schemes. My strength is at the front end of the development process and I have experience in all development / construction sectors. I would like to design more for charitable organisations and offer design services at cost for those particular clients. When I can financially support competition work, I look forward to winning a few.

What are your ambitions? My ambition is to grow to say, six to eight people and maintain active in all development sectors. As a design studio we will be known simply for producing rationale, well mannered and beautiful architecture.

How optimistic are you as a start-up practice?
I’ve been overwhelmed with a demand for my services since setting up Studio KMA. It’s not all fee paying work, but the potential is massive so I’m very optimistic looking ahead. I’m not looking for the end of the recession as I don’t believe workload will suddenly jump up and clients will start to pay for every line drawn. I simply aim to strike a balance between unpaid feasibility work and fee paying work. It’s important for me to work with people I enjoy working with.

How are you marketing yourselves? I’ve just completed the website so should have that up and running soon. Other than that, it’s all recommendations.
