New practices: Stallan-Brand

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Where have you come from? We ran our own studio at RMJM and have been working together for 17 years on a range of UK and international projects.

What work do you have and what kind of projects are you looking for? We’ve worked in virtually every sector over the years designing projects that range from £100k to £500million.  We hope to keep that type of diversity and mix of project scale going forward.  Quite simply we want to do the best work, for the best clients locally and in other interesting locations.  We’ve been surprised how many approaches we have had since establishing our practice and we’ve picked up a few interesting projects which we will be able to talk about in the coming months.  Our relationships that we have established over the years remain absolutely fundamental to us. 

What are your ambitions? To focus on the quality of the work and keep the practice to a manageable size.  We’re looking at establishing a presence in London and New York on the back of client opportunities. Our successes in the past supported a larger studio but we’re very keen going forward to manage the scale of the team and not feel that we have do everything.  

How optimistic are you as a start-up practice?  We’re actually feeling very optimistic about the future and there are definitely signs of the economic situation improving here in the UK.  We’re also lucky that we have extensive experience of working overseas with a number of clients, and we’re looking at some opportunities internationally where things are still very buoyant.  Also, the recession brings great opportunities for us as a new start up business, offering clients a dedicated service with both of us being involved in every project. We enjoyed leading a large team previously but going forward we would like to keep things more intimate. We are currently four strong.

How are you marketing yourselves?  We aren’t at the moment. We want to keep things simple and will be launching a website soon. We will also continue to build on the relationships that we have established over the years.
