New practices: Sketch London

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Sketch London, Wimbledon, London

Incorporated: October 2012

Main people: Neil Gaskin and Will Dewar

Where have you come from? We met at Nottingham University and worked abroad before Gaskin worked at bptw and Dewar at Axis Mason.

What work do you have and what kind of projects are you looking for? We started small, but are now working on two large new build houses along with refurbishment work and some exciting extensions. We have four projects on site and 14 on the books. We will look to expand the team slowly and sustainably. We are interested in entering competitions down the line when resources allow.

What are your ambitions? We would like to expand into a small studio of 10 or so architects and designers within the next couple of years. The majority of our work is in central London, but we would welcome the opportunity to work on projects outside the capital as well.

How optimistic are you as a start-up practice? The buoyancy in the smaller end of construction has reduced the apprehension in starting a new practice, despite the on-going recession.

How are you marketing yourselves? We rely on recommendation and are working on a slick new website. As a practice we would like to become known for providing clients with spaces that exceed their expectations and occasionally surprise.
