New practices: Bogle Architects

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Bogle Architects, London,  Prague and Hong Kong

Founded:  March 2012

Main people: Ian Bogle, Holm Bethge, Yui Fan Law, Viktorie Souckova.

Where have you come from?  Senior management are all ex -Foster and Partners and ex – BFLS. The remainder are all ex-BFLS but we have a few new faces appearing lately.

What work do you have and what kind of projects are you looking for?
We’ve an incredibly diverse portfolio in many locations across the globe such as the ELI Beamlines [super laser research facility] project in Prague which  we brought with us from BLFS.

We’re also looking at commercial and residential projects in London, Prague, Bratislava and Moscow. Further afield the projects include a visitors centre in Beijing, a biome and a mixed use tower in in the Guangdong Province and a really cool project in Singapore. Closer to home we’re working on a large mixed use project in Westminster, a complex project near our studio and a small hotel. In terms of profile we are seeking out interesting and challenging projects as that’s what we’re best suited to deliver.

What are your ambitions?
We’re around 30 people now in London and Prague and have plans to put people ‘on the ground’ in Hong Kong next year. Ideally, longer term, we will have three studios of around 30 people in each location as that is the optimum size for our style of operation. Initially we want to grow a strong London base but we all enjoy the international work where we marry a strong conceptual thought process with sound commercial practicalities. As a result we are a very collaborative practice which our Clients enjoy. I’d like us to be known as a practice that can think outside the box and turn complexity into simplicity.

How optimistic are you as a start-up practice? We’re very optimistic but also realistic. It’s all about ‘cash flow’ but there are interesting times ahead of us.

How are you marketing yourselves and what advice have you been given? Albert Taylor ( AKT II) suggested to me that I get a new pair of shoes .The last few years I’d been focussing on international work so now I’ve had the chance to visit all the people in the UK that I have worked with previously.
