New Practices #68: mor_architecture

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

mor_architecture, Poole, Dorset

Founded: July 2010

Main people:  Tim O’Rourke and Ted Gabriel

Where have you come from? Tim was an associate at Foster + Partners, before that he worked for Hamilton Associates, Design Engine Architects in Winchester and at Terence O’Rourke. Ted has spent the last few years at Patel Taylor where he started in 2005.

What work do you have and what kind of projects are you looking for?  Generally residential. We persuaded one client to knock down half of their house and rebuild it. We have also a new build one off house in a conservation area which is currently going through the planning system. Luckily in the current climate, we retained good contacts with consultants we came across in old practices and recently completed a concept master plan for 11 hectares in Casablanca on behalf of another firm.

What are your ambitions? We want to expand but we are determined to remain known for the quality of our work and we have already turned away work which does not fit with the ethos of the practice. We would like to think that in the coming years we could see a move away from the Londoncentric nature of British architecture, there are many excellent practices outside our fine capital that do not necessarily get the praise they deserve.

How optimistic are you as a start-up practice? It is hard in these tough times to remain optimistic, but looking back over the first few months of the practice we’re amazed at how well things have gone. The best advice we received came from Robin Partington - who finally started up on his own and who has been a source of encouragement and inspiration over the years - ‘Enjoy it!’
