New practice: Kamvari Architects

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Kamvari Architects, London and Tehran, Iran

Founded: July 2011

Main people: Omid Kamvari

Where have you come from? All over the place really, I treated my work experience a bit like a buffet. I’ve worked at Foster and Partners, Hamiltons (now BFLS), Make, Allies and Morrison and SOM . In between and during a six month stint where I was redundant, I set up Kamvari and Hamiltons which was a JV between Kamvari and Partners and Hamilton London - the company Tim Hamilton set up after the Hamiltons break-up.

What work do you have and what kind of projects are you looking for? We’ve a range of working from small scale, high-end residential work in London to housing projects in the north and a larger project in Iran. The dream to strike big on a competition is not lost on us, it took us a while to get right balance between live projects and competitions, after missing a few deadline and submitting in wrong formats. We are now finally firing on all cylinders.

We also dabble in a bit of academic work and research organizing and running 2 of the AA visiting schools one in Tehran, Iran and the other in Muscat, Oman. This year we’ll also be designing and constructing a pavilion for the new campus in Muscat.

What are your ambitions?
To
be bigger and better than any other practice before, actually I am not sure. Right now I would like to put together a fun, young and enthusiastic team….And maybe we can set our ambitions and goals together…..

How are you marketing yourselves? Our best tool at the moment seems to be word of mouth. I  always thought if you are to do work which exceeds your client’s expectation and surprises them then more would follow. But I guess this still needs to be proven.

How optimistic are you as a start-up practice?
Very. After numerous years of working for others I now have the freedom and responsibility  to choose my own path. We have opened the door and walked through and there is no turning back. The next six months will be crucial for us with a number of possibilities in the pipeline , it could go either way…
