MVRDV and Heatherwick named on Brit Insurance Design Awards shortlist

The shortlist for this year’s Brit Insurance Design Awards Nominations includes Thomas Heathwerwick’s UK Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo and MVDRV’s ‘balancing barn’ in Suffolk 

The fourth annual awards’ jury will be chaired by Stephen Bayley and include art and design curator Janice Blackburn, novelist Will Self, director of New York’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum Bill Moggeridge, graphic designer Mark Farrow, pro vice-chancellor of Kingston University Penny Spark and Simon Waterfall, co-founder of digital agency Poke. 

Nominations will be on show at an exhibition at the Design Museum from 16 February until 7 August 2011.

The seven category winners will be announced on 28 February and the overall winner will be announced on 15th March. The trophy will be exclusively designed y Ross Lovegrove. 

Alex Newson, curator of the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year exhibition said: ‘The sheer breadth of the shortlist reaffirms the importance of good design and how it can help improve daily lives or even refresh the familiar.’
