Mosedale Gillatt completes Millfield visitors' centre
[First look + plans + project data] Mosedale Gillatt Architects has completed this project to build a visitors’ centre and adjacent footbridge in Jesmond Dene park, Newcastle
The centre has been built within the existing boundary wall of Millfield House, in the picturesque parkland of Jesmond Dene, and provides exhibition, cafe and education facilities.
Tim Mosedale, one of the Directors at MGA, said: ‘This is a truly unique project – to have the opportunity to design a new visitor centre, footbridge and an education pavilion whilst in such a special place as Jesmond Dene comes around once in a lifetime. We are delighted that this has been so well received by the many users of the park.’
The £1.46 million scheme makes use of rainwater harvesting techniques and also incorporates a sedum roof. The exterior ground floor facades - where not hidden behind the existing stone wall - are rendered white with ample glazing, and the first floor features Siberian larch cladding.
The project has received a RICS North East Renaissance Award (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) for Tourism and Leisure and is also shortlisted for an RIBA Award (North East).
The buildings are part of a £6m Heritage Lottery Fund and Newcastle City Council-backed regeneration project known as Ouseburn Parks.
